The university town of Reading is just half an hour from London’s Paddington station. Its proximity to the Capital and its own, enviable list of facilities and amenities, make it popular with thousands of commuters and students from all over the county. One of the first things any visitor notices about Reading is its many different aspects. One moment you’ll be in a busy shopping centre and the next, in a quiet suburban street. Moments later you’ll be out in peaceful and picturesque countryside or on the banks of the majestic River Thames.
With so many different scenes, it’s little wonder that the town never loses its appeal, making it a popular place for those searching for pubs for sale. You can live all your life in Reading and only then, begin to scratch the surface of what this busy metropolis has to offer. The scenery around Reading is some of the most beautiful to be found anywhere in the south. From pretty little Thames side villages, to the inspiring beauty of the Chilterns, the scenery is forever changing. Windsor & Eton
Windsor is famous for its castle. The largest inhabited stronghold in the world and England’s largest castle, it has over 900 years of history and has become a favoured Royal residence. The Queen stays here to perform official duties during April and returns for the second week in June for Garter Day and Royal Ascot. She also chooses to stay here during many of her private weekends. As is tradition, when the Queen is in residence, you will see the Royal Standard flying atop the Round Tower. At all other times, when the Queen is not at home, the Union Flag is flown.
The town of Windsor, which is situated on the River Thames just opposite Eton, retains much of its original charm and character and is very popular with residents and visitors alike. For such a small town, Windsor is remarkably well connected. It has two railway stations, the Windsor & Eton Central station which operates trains between Windsor and Slough and the Windsor & Eton Riverside station, linking to Waterloo. Much of the Central Station, which sits almost immediately opposite Castle Hill, the main public entrance to Windsor Castle has now however, been converted to a shopping centre so it is more a tourist trap than a rail station.
Eton on the other side of the river Thames, is connected to Windsor via a narrow bridge. It was until fairly recently, in Buckinghamshire, but county boundary changes have seen to it, that this ancient seat of learning now resides under the banner of Berkshire. The college at Eton is the most famous “public school” in the UK and many famous people went to school there, including both Prince William and Prince Harry. There are guided tours on offer but to gain entrance you must pay a fee.

Maidenhead
Maidenhead, again on the River Thames, is part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. A relatively new town compared with its surrounding areas it is linked by the A4 to the M4, which stretches from London to the south of Wales.
Perhaps the most famous and extraordinary sight in Maidenhead is of the bridge that should never be. One of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s creations, the Maidenhead railway bridge has the widest and flattest brick built arches in the world. If you didn’t know better, you’d swear its arches were going to collapse into the river at any time. So seemingly treacherous was the design that the rail authorities at the time of its unveiling, resolved to keep its wooden supports in place, in the hope that they would help strengthen the structure and stop it collapsing. These wooden supports have long since rotted away and some one hundred and seventy years later the structure still stands and is still in use.
The town of Maidenhead grew in its present location because at the time, it was a day’s ride from London. Travellers to Bath and beyond needed rest and accommodation, to say nothing of libations and so Maidenhead was born and with it, no less than four breweries.
The next big change for to town came with the Great Western Railway in 1838. I K Brunel spanned the river with his scarily flat arched bridge and with that, the town all but died as the railway took away the road traffic that had delivered so much of the town’s wealth. The railway soon came back into favour however and Maidenhead was revitalised as people began to realise, they could live out in the country, but use the train to come back to Maidenhead to do business and buy provisions.
Many a well-heeled Londoner would come out from the smoke to the sticks, to get away from the city and have a bit of fun by the river and hotels, guesthouses and inns sprung up to cater for this new demand. This may well be part of the reason that there are at present, no less than 150 licensed premises in and around Maidenhead. There’s good shopping too. The Nicholson’s Shopping Centre stands on the site of the old Nicholson’s Brewery, one of the town’s four breweries which are now all closed. The High Street and shopping centre and surrounding roads are home instead to many national chain stores, banks and a market that operates on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
