Guildford
The county town of Surrey, Guildford is situated south west of London, on the ridge of the North Downs. The town has a lovely old high street, which harks back to a time of cobbled streets and historic buildings. This picture is further accentuated by the town’s Guildhall with its glorious gilded clock which protrudes out over the street. Standing proud over the centre of the town is its modern Cathedral, which boasts some very fine craftsmanship. By way of interesting comparison, pay a visit to the Norman Castle Keep, the Guildford Museum, Abbots Hospital and the Medieval Undercroft. All these attractions and more, feature on a free guided tour of the town that is offered in the summer
Guildford is a veritable hotbed of theatre and residents and visitors alike, can attend the
Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, or the Electric Theatre, so called because it used to be a power station. Musicals and concerts are also performed regularly at the Guildford Civic Centre, home to the Guildford Philharmonic Orchestra as well as modern music and comedy shows. Shopping in Guildford is a real joy, as not only do you have the pretty, cobbled high street with roads off, you also have the vast contemporary shopping centre known as Tunsgate Square. Here, you’ll find most of the major high street names in fashion plus plenty of coffee shops for that well deserved break.
Woking
Strange to relate, the Surrey town of Woking was originally intended as a huge cemetery. A large parcel of land on Woking Common was purchased by a London firm who intended to use it as a burial ground. As it turned out, only a portion of that land was ever used as such, the rest being turned over to development for the newly emerging Woking Town
Situated in north-west Surrey, just 25 miles from London, this area was made much more accessible by the arrival of the Basingstoke Canal and the railway in 1838. Suddenly, Londoners had somewhere to go, where there would not be a land shortage. Even today, a large part of Woking Town is reminiscent of Victorian London though lately, the picture has started to change. Early 70’s architecture has in part, replaced Victoriana but large parts of it are being preserved and refreshed for history’s sake.
Epsom and Ewell
A great place to live, to work and to visit, Epsom and Ewell present The Derby. You cannot think of Epsom without thinking of the most famous of “flat” racecourses, The Derby. It’s called a “flat” course because there are no jumps in the race, but the course is anything but flat. It is a hair-raising combination of steep up hill climbs, sharp down hills and tight corners. It is the course where, back in 1913, the suffragette Emily Davison, famously threw herself in front of King George V’s horse “Anmer”, in an attempt to draw attention to the plight of women at the time.
There are a good number of pubs in and around Epsom and Ewell, which is not surprising given that The Derby attracts so many visitors to the region. What is surprising is that very few are named after anything to do with horse racing. At the very least you might expect a “Horse and Jockey” or a “Runner and Rider” but, at time of writing, there are none. The closest we could find is “The Ladas”. Located in Woodcote Rd at its junction with Chalk Lane, The Ladas is named after the 1894 Derby winner, which was owned by the Prime Minister of the time, Lord Rosebery.
Farnham
Farnham is a small crossroads town in Surrey, located close to the Surrey-Hampshire border. This idyllic countryside location made it a popular meeting place and the scene of a famous hop and grain market in days gone by. Its high street shops, towns buildings and older townhouses, still bear all the markings of tradition, making it a breath of fresh air, when compared so some of the newer, more modern towns in the area. The outskirts of the town, having said that, are quite modern indeed and development of the area, continues to encroach on the surrounding countryside.
The centre of Farnham and many of its side roads are lined with eighteenth and nineteenth century buildings, many of which are listed. There are also many narrow side streets and alleys, the most popular of which is the Lion and Lamb Yard. An old builders yard, redeveloped in the 1980s, it’s a pleasant cobbled courtyard and pedestrian shopping centre with a cafe and bistro. It serves as the main entry to the town centre from the Hart car park, passing a major superstore. The courtyard used to house Thomas Mathews and Co, a brewer who won two medals at the 1890 Brewer’s Exhibition in London as well as one of Farnham’s many old coaching inns.
The county of Surrey is served by one of the busiest rail networks in the UK, with links to London and the two major southern airports of Heathrow and Gatwick. This makes Surrey one of the most sought after locations in terms of travel, not just to the Capital, but also to Europe and the rest of the world. Because of this, Surrey is home to more organisations and company headquarters than any other county in the UK with electronics giants Nikon, Whirlpool, Canon, Toshiba, Samsung and Philips all having offices here. Kia Motors and Toyota UK also have their UK headquarters here, as do some of the largest FMCG multinationals in the world, including Unilever, P&G, Superdrug, Nestle, SC Johnson, Kimberly-Clark and Colgate-Palmolive.
In Surrey you will find every type of accommodation from cosy little B and B’s to first-class spa hotels, and everything in between. Here the traditional old country pub sits almost hand in hand with the modern contemporary wine bar, so when looking for pubs for sale, where better to look than this diverse and beautiful county.
