Pubs for Sale in Wiltshire
One of the advantages of looking at pubs for sale in Wiltshire is the wonderful countryside you get thrown into the bargain. The county’s lush greenery and the history that is bound up in its towns and villages makes it a delightfully interesting place to live and work. Salisbury, with its Cathedral is a hugely important historical city and though other Wiltshire towns are larger, it is probably Wiltshire’s most popular tourist attraction; after Stonehenge and the thirteen Wiltshire white horses that is!
These tourist draws add to a Wiltshire economy that already benefits from its location. With excellent road and rail connections to London and the West Country, the county has attracted big business and many large multi-national corporations have set up shop here, especially to the north around Swindon.
The southern part of the county, takes on a less business orientated, more ancient and ethereal feel and this juxtaposition, gives rise to some distinctly different pub types. There are busy town pubs, historic pubs and country style pubs, all of which will have their own peculiar clientele. The presence of the armed forces in the area, around Salisbury Plain benefits the local clubs and bars and many of these have been tailored to suit such a market.
In contrast, the more remote destination pubs have all the charm and character of village life and are very family-centric.
Prices of pubs for sale in Wiltshire vary. Generally the historic Salisbury bars benefit from a greater value than the smaller commercial town pubs which in turn benefit from a higher value due to density of population than the destination pubs, but possibly at a cost to the idealistic life style.

Trowbridge
The town of Trowbridge has its early beginnings in the wool trade. It went on to become a centre for the manufacture of steam engines and later, beer and beds. Some of the pubs in Trowbridge, reflect this with names like The Lamb and The Malthouse, so when looking for pubs for sale in Trowbridge, keep an eye out for these and the history they bring with them.
Wiltshire’s county offices are located in Trowbridge, giving the town the distinction of it being the county town of Wiltshire over and above Salisbury with its cathedral or Swindon which is larger. It was chosen as the county town due to its location. Throughout Wiltshire communication was always a problem. The Salisbury Plain got in the way making communications to the other towns more difficult. Since all the main railway lines ran east to west in the south of the county, Trowbridge was more the accessible and therefore, the obvious choice as county town.

Swindon
Old Swindon, as the original part of town is now known, is an area of quiet courtyards and alleyways with a vibrant mix of traditional shops and pubs. The Great Western Railway brought with it a whole new town, which was created between the new railway works and Swindon Hill. Today this is Swindon’s town centre, a fully pedestrianised area, offering both indoor and outdoor shopping. So, whether you are in search of the latest fashions, or have an eye for a bargain, this is the place to be.
These two very different sides to Swindon and the wealth of greenery that can be found on its outskirts give plenty of scope for the different styles of pubs the area has to offer. Within the town you’ll find old style taverns and new town centre pubs and on the outskirts of town, you’ll find the larger, family orientated pubs and gastro pubs.

Devizes
No piece written about Wiltshire would be complete without a look at Devizes. The central market town of Wiltshire, Devizes is situated between the A4, London to Bristol road, and the A303, almost midway between Bath and Marlborough. This means it is ideally located for all those that require access to London and yet appreciate the great beauty of the English countryside. The town’s heritage includes Georgian houses and a castle, which stands today, on the site of a Norman stronghold dating back to 1080 and its museums feature some of the finest Bronze Age archaeological finds in the country, which include items from Avebury and Stonehenge.
This quite charming and historic market town is home to the Wadworth’s Brewery Company and there is a very good chance that if you buy a pub in Devizes, you will be visited by their famous Shire horses which make daily deliveries in town. Like Adnams of Southwold in Suffolk, the brewery is independent and the ales may be sampled at their visitor centre where tours of the brewery and stables can be booked.

Malmesbury
Malmesbury is England’s oldest borough. It is set on a hill on the edge of the Cotswolds and its prominent skyline can be seen for miles around. A medieval abbey demarcates the northernmost point of the town with the rest spreading southwards, past Market Cross, into pretty lanes that are lined with period houses.
With a history dating back over 1,000 years, the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries saw it in its heyday, as a weaving centre which became known for its fine silk and lace. This has left the town with many historical sites, among them the fine 15th century Market Cross, the Old Courtroom and Almshouses, its narrow medieval streets, quaint alleyways and an interesting river walk which holds some colourful stories of the townsfolk.
Many of the town’s restaurants and shops serve succulent, locally produced foods in atmospheric surroundings. Unusual, independent retail outlets offer plenty of shopping opportunities and
a varied range of events are hosted by the town, from Farmer’s Markets to the Summer Carnival in August and frequent concerts in the Abbey grounds
In the late 18th Century, the introduction of mechanical methods of production enabled the textile trade to expand for a time. This led to the town becoming, for a while at least, a centre of the lace-making industry. Progress in this area was halted by the town’s lack of infrastructure however and
the Industrial Revolution passed Malmesbury by. The railway arrived in 1877 adding to the area’s prosperity and lately a number of well known companies have moved to the area, headed by the town’s major employer Dyson, manufacturers of the bagless vacuum cleaner.
Evidence of Malmesbury’s historic past can be seen in its large number of listed buildings. There are around 400 listed properties in the town and it became a conservation area in 1971 making it nigh on impossible to get permission to make an serious structural changes to a building. This has led in many cases to imaginative use being made of the space available. To find pubs for sale in Malmesbury, whether ancient of relatively modern, contact us now.
